Managing Staff on Shift: 3 November 2026
A CQC-Focused Course for Deputies and Supervisors
Service Description
This practical course is designed for Deputy Managers and Supervisors who are expected to lead staff on shift and respond immediately to poor practice. Under CQC expectations, leadership responsibility does not rest solely with the Registered Manager. Inspectors expect anyone in a leadership role to take timely, proportionate action to safeguard people who use services and maintain standards.
This course equips frontline leaders with the confidence, authority, and clarity needed to manage staff supportively, lawfully, and consistently, while understanding when escalation is required.
Why Attend?
Poor people management is a common theme in CQC enforcement action, safeguarding failures, staff grievances and tribunals. This course supports services to evidence strong leadership at all levels.
What the Course Covers
Participants will gain practical guidance on:
- What CQC expects from leaders on shift
- Delegated authority and accountability in the absence of the Registered Manager
- How to address poor practice immediately and proportionately
- Informal (supportive) people management vs formal disciplinary processes
- How to conduct effective on-shift support conversations
- When and how to escalate concerns safely
- Protecting service users, staff, and yourself as a leader
The course focuses on early, supportive intervention so issues are handled on shift — while people who use services remain protected.
